Virtual Team Virtuoso: example of a stand alone desktop based package

You’re leading a virtual team for the very first time. Are you happy that all team members know what they should be doing and are working effectively? Do you know how to provide support? How much support is too much?

This is the challenge behind “Virtual Team Virtuoso”. Set in the year 2019, a virtual team needs to provide vital services to an earthquake ravaged city.¬†Learners are presented with a comprehensive simulation package. Assisted by a virtual tutor and embedded multimedia resources, they learn by making choices and observing the outcome.

Turn on your speakers and give it a go – some of the solutions will surprise you.

Even seasoned leaders can struggle when they work with a virtual team for the first time. Regular issues that are faced by a team working together in a physical office can be magnified when they are separated by time, space and international borders. How do you ensure that everyone is doing what they should be doing without micro-managing and disengaging everyone? How much support is enough? The key to working effectively in a virtual team and minimising distance (at least psychologically) is to maintain high levels of trust. This online course is based on a real life scenario. Take on the role of a virtual team leader who has to manage their international team through a high stakes project. The well-being of an entire community will depend on your ability to learn on the go. You can choose whether to take an easy pathway (with lots of help) or a quicker, more difficult pathway. Be warned though, you will be forced to backtrack if you make the wrong decision. A virtual coach has been embedded in the course to help you become a true virtuosoWe offer this course in three parts, each of which will take approximately 30-60 minutes to complete, depending on the learning pathway chosen. The three parts as a whole make up a complete story. We recommend that you follow them in sequence.Common threads, such as cross cultural communication, run through each part. There are slightly different focus points, however, for the three parts:Part 1 - Learn more about the first T in trust and how to apply this to the scenario challenge. Topics include: setting up team protocols, effective communication by email and video conferencingPart 2 - Learn more about the U and S in trust and how to apply this to the scenario challenge. Topics include: dealing with low motivation, communicating clearly with second language speakers, teleconferencing, creating a communication plan.Part 3 - Learn more about the second T and the R in trust and how to apply this to the scenario challenge. Topics include: authentic leadership, choosing the right technology, motivation.A demo of e-learning course created by Adobe Captivate
